Go Car Rental Iceland Review 2026: Is It Worth Booking?

If there’s one mistake that could ruin an Iceland trip, it’s underestimating how important transportation is.

Before visiting Iceland, we seriously considered skipping the rental car entirely to save money. We looked at tours, buses, and even staying only in Reykjavík.

Looking back now, that would have been a huge mistake.

Because the best parts of Iceland weren’t the tourist attractions themselves.

It was everything in between.

The random waterfall we found with nobody else around.
The black sand beach we stopped at during sunset.
The empty roads through lava fields that honestly felt unreal.

That freedom only happened because we rented a car.

And after comparing several companies, we ended up booking with Go Car Rental.

Iceland Is NOT a Typical Vacation Destination

This surprised us immediately.

Iceland isn’t the kind of place where you stay in one hotel and casually visit nearby attractions.

The country is built for road trips.

Most famous places are spread far apart:

  • waterfalls
  • glaciers
  • volcanoes
  • black sand beaches
  • canyon viewpoints
  • remote hot springs

Without your own car, you miss a huge part of the experience.

And honestly, many tours felt:

  • rushed
  • crowded
  • inflexible
  • expensive

We wanted the freedom to experience Iceland properly.

That’s why we chose self-driving instead.

Why We Chose Go Car Rental

We compared:

  • local Iceland rental companies
  • airport rentals
  • international brands
  • cheaper budget options

But Go Car Rental stood out because they seemed designed specifically for Iceland travel.

That mattered to us.

Driving in Iceland is very different from driving in most countries:

  • weather changes quickly
  • wind can become strong
  • roads vary constantly
  • some routes are gravel
  • winter conditions can become difficult

We wanted a company that actually understood Iceland road trips — not just basic car rentals.

The Moment We Knew Renting a Car Was Worth It

It happened on our second day.

We were driving along the South Coast with no real schedule, and suddenly saw a small road leading toward a waterfall that wasn’t even part of our original plan.

No tour buses.
No crowds.
No time pressure.

Just us, the road, and Iceland.

That became one of our favorite memories from the entire trip.

And honestly, moments like that happened constantly once we had the freedom to drive ourselves.

Why Flexibility Matters So Much in Iceland

Iceland weather changes incredibly fast.

One minute:

  • sunshine

Thirty minutes later:

  • rain
  • fog
  • strong wind

Having our own vehicle allowed us to:

  • adjust plans instantly
  • avoid bad weather
  • stop whenever scenery looked amazing
  • stay longer in places we loved
  • leave crowded tourist areas quickly

That flexibility completely changed the quality of the trip.

We Chose a 4×4 — And I’d Probably Do It Again

At first, we debated renting a cheaper small car.

But after seeing Iceland road conditions ourselves, I completely understood why so many travelers recommend SUVs or 4×4 vehicles.

Even during normal weather, roads can suddenly become:

  • windy
  • wet
  • gravel-covered

The extra stability made driving far more comfortable.

And if you visit Iceland during:

  • winter
  • shoulder season
  • northern lights season

I’d strongly recommend not choosing the absolute cheapest vehicle possible.

The Biggest Surprise? Driving Was Actually Enjoyable

Before the trip, I expected long drives to feel tiring.

Instead, driving became one of the highlights of Iceland.

Every few minutes the scenery changes:

  • waterfalls appear beside the road
  • glaciers suddenly become visible
  • mountains emerge through clouds
  • lava fields stretch endlessly
  • sheep casually walk nearby

Honestly, some roads in Iceland feel like driving through another planet.

What We Liked About Go Car Rental

Simple Pickup Process

After landing at Keflavík Airport, we really appreciated how straightforward the pickup felt.

After a long flight, simplicity matters more than people think.

The Vehicle Felt Reliable

This was important because Iceland roads and weather can become unpredictable quickly.

The SUV felt:

  • comfortable
  • stable
  • modern
  • reliable for long distances

Freedom to Travel Properly

This was the biggest reason renting a car changed the trip.

Instead of being rushed between tourist stops, Iceland felt open and flexible.

That made the experience feel much more personal and memorable.

A Few Things I’d Recommend Before Booking

Book Earlier Than You Think

Especially for:

  • automatic cars
  • SUVs
  • 4×4 vehicles

Iceland vehicle availability disappears surprisingly fast during summer.

Don’t Skip Insurance

Seriously.

Iceland weather is unpredictable, and strong wind alone can sometimes damage car doors unexpectedly.

The extra insurance is worth the peace of mind.

Plan Less Than You Normally Would

This sounds strange, but Iceland becomes much better when you leave room for spontaneity.

Some of our best memories happened completely unplanned.

Is Go Car Rental Worth It?

For us, absolutely yes.

Not because it was simply “a rental car.”

But because it gave us:

  • freedom
  • flexibility
  • unforgettable scenery
  • spontaneous experiences
  • a much deeper Iceland trip

Without our own vehicle, the trip honestly would not have felt the same.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, renting a car was probably the single most important decision we made for Iceland.

The freedom to stop anywhere, explore unexpected places, and experience Iceland without strict schedules completely changed the trip.

If you’re planning to visit Iceland and truly want to experience the country beyond crowded tourist buses, renting your own vehicle is absolutely worth it.

And based on our experience, Go Car Rental is definitely one of the better options to consider.
