This is honestly the main reason we’d choose a campervan again in Iceland.
With a campervan, your schedule becomes incredibly flexible.
You can:

Some of our favorite moments happened completely by accident.

The Campervan We Rented
We chose a medium-sized campervan because we wanted enough room to sleep comfortably while still being easy to drive around Iceland.
The camper included:

The heating system was probably the most important feature.
Even during summer, Iceland nights can get surprisingly cold, especially near glaciers or on windy days.

Driving Around Iceland
Before the trip, I was honestly nervous about driving in Iceland.
But after the first day, it felt much easier than expected.
Most of the Ring Road is straightforward, and driving a campervan actually reduced stress because we didn’t need to constantly check into hotels or move luggage around every day.
That said, Iceland weather changes fast.
If you plan to travel during winter or explore the Highlands/F-roads, I’d strongly recommend renting a 4×4 campervan.

How Much Money We Saved
Iceland is expensive.
Accommodation alone can become a huge part of your budget.
One thing we liked about traveling by campervan is that it combines:

Things to Know Before Booking
No campervan company is perfect, and I think realistic expectations are important.
A few things worth knowing before booking:
- peak summer dates sell out early
- weather in Iceland changes fast
- full insurance is highly recommended
- campsites can become busy during July and August
Personally, I would absolutely recommend getting strong insurance coverage in Iceland because gravel roads and wind can sometimes cause damage unexpectedly.
Is Go Campers Worth It?
For most travelers visiting Iceland — honestly, yes.
Especially if you want:
- flexibility
- scenic road trips
- lower accommodation costs
- freedom to explore
- northern lights opportunities
- a more adventurous experience
A campervan changes the entire way you experience Iceland.
Instead of simply moving between tourist attractions, the road trip itself becomes part of the adventure.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, renting a campervan was probably the best decision we made for Iceland.
